Handling CDs

Following the aftermath of Xmas (and our recent SOP for dosette boxes) we have had a little bit of time to start some proactive work in the form of beginning to write our SOP on handling CDs which is now required from 1st January.

There doesn’t seem to be a huge amount of practical guidance around so we have used the information in the FAQs on the RPSGB controlled drugs website at http://www.rpsgb.org.uk/worldofpharmacy/
useofmedicines/controlleddrugs.html
- very useful by the way) and the general SOPs guidance from the NPA as a starting point.

I’ll let you know how I get on!

CDs are just a pain at the moment. I've just started managing somewhere that was running on locums for a few months. I found discrepancies with eight or nine of the running balances. Managed to correct many of these, but have had to adjust the balances on others.

For those that were adjusted we actually had more stock than we should have had in some cases, but in two cases there was stock missing and a thorough investigation couldn't account for it (information from wholesalers, reports from PMRs, some help from local surgery). So I've sent a letter to the superintendent and am expecting a call sometime tomorrow...

And this pharmacy only introduced running balances in July 06... As for the RPSGB guidance of checking stock against the balances weekly - what world do they live in?

That sound's like an absolute nightmare. I hope this is resolved soon for you.

And as for the RPSGB guidance on checking running balances weekly, I have to say that we are managing to do this monthly and that seems to work well for us.
